Hogwarts Legacy Set in the Nineteenth Century

The upcoming Harry Potter open-world RPG Hogwarts Legacy is going to be set in the 1800s, according to the official Warner Brothers website for the game.

This took me by surprise: I initially assumed it would be set during the same period as the books.

Instead of Voldemort or even Grindelwald, you will “… hold the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart.” Your character also “… possess an ability to perceive and master ancient magic.” What this threat is is not clear.

According to the Harry Potter Lexicon, ‘ancient magic’ in the HP universe is described as such:

Ancient Magic is magic which happens independently of efforts by wizards, an effect which is triggered by events and powers endemic to the nature of reality. It is extremely old and mysterious, and a wand is not necessary for it to work. It is part of the “magical-ness” of the universe. Examples include the bond of love which happens when someone sacrifices them self for another and the inherent magic resistance in the skin of dragons and giants. Ancient magic is studied in the Department of Mysteries.

You may remember Harry Potter’s mum sacrificed herself to save Harry, using the Sacrificial Protection charm.

As a fan of the books (and movies, of course), I am really interested to delve into the other kinds of magic hinted at.

To say I am excited for this game is an understatement!
